Day Three

Meanwhile, back at the jail again…
The half-elf Arlayna had also found herself behind bars. She was also given the same offer as the others before her. She appeared before Saieka, Merenwen and Moleiri along with the wizard. He stated that the “rat problem” was getting worse and disappeared with Saieka leaving Arlayna behind. Portia was startled by the brief interlude, but Moleiri said it was becoming a fairly common occurrence. Portia stated that she would be on her own way once we helped her locate her party. Despite Arlayna’s complaints, Moleiri stated that since Portia’s party was originally in the direction we were heading, it wasn’t going to be too much out of our way to help her before continuing about our quest.

When the group readies to head out the next day, there’s a black wolf waiting at the edge of camp. Merenwen approached the wolf and it accepted her attention, being rather friendly. With Merenwen’s background, she determined that the wolf was her animal companion. The group headed off to find Portia’s party. While walking, Portia started a conversation about the Phoenix Sword asking the travelers which party member thought they’d be the next King. Merenwen said she wasn’t interested in being a King or Queen. When Arlayna told Portia that she was going to be the next King, Merenwen snorted and moved off to find Moleiri. Portia said the mage in her party had said that he thought he was descended from the line of the kings and hoped that there would be no conflict between our party and hers. Moleiri piped into the conversation from concealment. After the conversation died down, Portia said that she thought the group was getting close to where she thought her party was last located and therefore should take the lead. Molieri commented that he had found nothing close.

After some additional time and travel, Moleir heard something approaching him where he was on point… He saw two fighters and it looked like they had either heard or spotted him. When it seemed like they were separating to find him, Moleiri went invisible and hide from their search. While they weren’t able to find him, they were able to hear Portia and the rest of the party. When they actually see Portia, they call out to her. They asked her “Is the Princess safe?” She replied that, “The Princess left in the night” which she told Merenwen and Arlayna that was their code that meant we weren’t holding her hostage and should be considered friends. Portia thanked the group and left with the fighters.

The group continued to look for the ogres. Late in the day, Moleiri heard some very loud voices who weren’t speaking in any language that any of the party members understood. Moleiri asked the others to wait for him while he went to investigate. Merenwen moved off to the side of the path in case the unknown people were approaching. Moleiri approached and saw it was a party of ogres sitting around eating various things, including a horse. Arlayna said she was going to go see what she could find and took off before Merenwen could stop her. Moleiri came back telling Merenwen that it was ogres. Merenwen told the others that ogres are big and dumb, and they often speak giant. Moleiri stated that there was magic, magic that he thought was coming from the object that belonged to the carcasses they were eating. The group decide to have Moleiri cast charm on one of the ogres, lure him to a trap that Merenwen sent up to trip and hinder him.

With this plan in place, when one wondered off by himself, Moleiri successfully cast charm person. It didn’t look like the ogre understood what Moleiri was saying, but it followed him and his pantomiming directions. The ogre got one leg caught in the trap, so it didn’t take him completely down. The group advanced to engage with him. Moleiri disappeared and reappeared as he initiated a sneak attack on the ogre. Then Merenwen killed him with a massive cleave of her battle axe. The group decided to head back to the ogre group to make sure none of the others had heard anything. We found the other ogres sitting where they were previously. Arlayna decided to try sneaking around the group and found one out away from the others. It shouted and charged when it saw her. She charged as well, but missed. The other ones were focusing on the shouting and sounds of battle off to the side of their clearing. Moleiri disappeared and cast a darkness spell centered around three of the ogres. Merenwen was caught in the darkness and walked out. She killed one of the ogres that had attacked Arlayna, but another caused enough damage to Arlayna to make her unconscious from her wounds. One of the ogres that had been caught in the darkness escaped and also attacked Arlayna and Merenwen. Merenwen killed the second ogre while Moleiri kept disappearing, attacking and disappearing again. Merenwen killed the third ogre and used some of the healing potions on Arlayna and the wolf. Once she was awake, Arlayna used some of her bracelet’s charges to heal herself while Merenwen and Moleiri did the same to themselves. Moleir found that the magic items were three salves, a stylus, a gem and some gold totaling two thousand in a pouch which was divided amongst the party members. Moleiri mentioned getting away from the site of the battle in case the two ogres who ran away were to return. Merenwen worked to hide the group’s trail. Merenwen found a good hiding spot for the rest of the evening. Arlayna discoverd that the gem was able to identify objects six times a day. As such, the first salve was a neutralize poison. Salve two was cure disease and salve three was remove curse. The stylus was a one use item that would allow the holder to place a magic rune of healing enhancement that would enhance the effect. The rest of the night passed uneventfully.

Day Two

Meanwhile, back at the jail…
Saieka was made the same offer as Merenwen, Zeder and Moleiri, which she accepted. In addition to the bracelet, she was given a potion skin that creates three cure potions a day. The wizard transported Saieka to where the original party was trying to revive Moleiri. He said Lord Mentar had a “rat problem” and grabbed Zeder, leaving Saieka behind.

After a brief standoff and introduction, Merenwen requested the potion to heal up Moleiri. After healing, Merenwen noticed the gnoll prisoner was getting close to loosening his rope bonds. The gnoll started trying to bargain with Merenwen — that if she let him go, he would tell the others to go easy on the party… Merenwen laughed, picked him up by the scruff and showed him the carnage from the battle and told him he was the one who needed to be worried about the party going easy. Moleiri cast suggestion on the gnoll, suggesting that the gnoll help the party, to better insure his own survival. The gnoll appeared to agree and asked to be released. Merenwen untied him and the gnoll said we all should go somewhere else for the evening, as scavengers would be attracted to the dead bodies. The gnoll asked for his weapon and then said he knew a safe place nearby. The group followed him about 30 min to a secluded area. Moleiri sent the gnoll off to get the hyena carcass to eat and then shot it in the back with his hand crossbow when he returned. Moleiri convinced the bespelled gnoll that some unknown enemy had shot him. The gnoll told Moleiri they should run and when he turned his back again, Moleiri threw up a darkness and took him down. When Moleiri returned, he was transporting the gnoll on a travois. The group rested and in the morning, the gnoll (who was no longer under Moleiri’s control) tried to run away. Saieka cast lullaby and when the group got to him, Moleiri cast charm on him again. Moleiri started asking more questions about the gnoll camp, the Swordseekers, patrols, the gnoll king, etc.. The party discovered there was also a ogre camp and decided to see if maybe the ogres had the stone and sword.

The party headed off to find the ogres. The party was ambushed by a giant preying mantas. It snatched Merenwen and tried to eat her, but she was able to break its hold. The others fired at the insect. Then a spear came out of “nowhere” with the killing blow while spear killed the gnoll. Moleiri lead the discussion with the second party of humans (noble Viking-type fighters). The leader said that they wanted the party to “stay out of their business” and to adventure in a different direction from where they were headed. The group decided to head at a slightly off direction and then cut back towards our original direction that would lead us to the ogres. The group stopped for some hunting and saw a campfire in the distance. We decided to get closer to investigate and then Moleiri proceeded to sneak in closer so he could listen to the conversation better. From the arguments, Moleiri believed that this was probably the Swordseekers. We returned to our camp and decided to avoid this other group as well.

Not long afterwards, the party was attacked by a wandering troll. It dealt some mighty blows to Merenwen, but the party was eventually able to kill it and burn the remains. After setting it afire, the party moved to a new location for the rest of the night. In the morning, Moleiri went scouting and found a wounded cleric named Portia in the woods.

He offered her assistance and escorted her back to the camp when she accepted. Moleiri suggested we give the cleric a potion. She thanked us and said she couldn’t repay us at the moment, since she didn’t have any spells available. Portia offered to provide healing for the party tomorrow, if we would escort her and try to help any surviving members of her party. On the way back to her campsite, the group encountered the Viking group from the previous day, cleaning up from dispatching ogres….

Day One

Following a the night in jail after a bar brawl, Merenwen, Zeder and Moleiri were called into the courtroom by Lord Mentar. He mentioned that the Phoenix Blade – legendary blade of the kings of Port Kar- had returned. He said we’d be set free and paid 5000 gold if we destroy the blade and bring back the stone. Our first task was to find the Hydra Station. After finding the Station, we would be teleported near to the sword’s location and then be able to search for the sword’s location.

We were each “given” a bracelet that would monitor our location, but also restore 1d6 of damage. The bracelets held 10 charges and would regenerate up to 1d4 charges per night.

Moleiri said someone at the inn he was staying at had been talking about the Hydra Station. The group headed to the inn to see if this person was there but the bartender said the man probably be there in the later in the evening. While waiting, the group went to the temple next door to look there for hints on where we could find the Hydra Station. One acolyte said it was in our best interest to not know about the Hydra Station; the other hit on Merenwen and said she would share the info on the location if Merenwen accompanied her to the back room. Merenwen declined and the group spent the afternoon wandering about the neighborhood. In the evening, The group returned to the inn to find that the man had already been there and left when he heard a drow was looking for him. Then we headed to the tavern down the road and found the man there. Moleiri cast suggestion on him and he told Merenwen about the Station. When a drunkard accusing Zeder of stealing his gold purse, the group was able to leave the bar with little difficulty and head down the alleys where the Station was supposed to be located.

While looking for the door that had the sign of the hydra, the threesome was stopped by some human fighters who tried to extort safe passage. Merenwen dropped the fighter facing her quickly and went to help Moleiri with the two facing him. Her arrows were enough to make the second fall and the last fighter/thug retreated down the alley way. Moleiri pursued the fleeing thug and found him climbing a rope. He was able to impede the guy’s climb by grabbing his leg. Merenwen checked the second fighter, recovered her arrows, and then Zeder stabilized his wounds. Merenwen headed down the alley after Moleiri and the third assailant. Moleiri used spider climb and intimidated the thief into descending the rope and leaving a bag of magic goodies (bracers, whetstone and 200gp). Moleiri also took the MW long sword from the thief and divided up the gold. Merenwen asked the thug where the Hydra Station was, and he indicated they were standing at the back of the building. The group released him and headed to the door of the Station after Morelei healed himself using the bracer.

Merenwen knocked on the door. When the doorman asked the group’s business, she said they were here for transportation. Zeder added that we were hired by Lord Mentar. The doorman let the group in, saying “We’ve been expecting you.” There was a free-standing door in the middle of the room. Merenwen went through the mist-filled door, followed by Moleiri and Zeder. They ended in a larger room that contained a short goblin-like fellow and several chests. The room seemed to glow with magic when Moleiri used detect magic. There was a growling noise and Zeder’s dogs started growling in response. The goblinoid told “Pooki” to show himself, and a chimera appeared. The goblinoid stated that the sword had been found by something, but that whatever it was didn’t realize what it had found. He also said that anyone else who was searching would not be on our side. He stated we would be transported in a circle to the Depp Woods and that when all three bracelets were in the circle, we would be returned to the goblinoid’s room. Before he sent us on our way, he mentioned that the return circle would be invisible unless you were standing in the circle.

Merenwen marked the surroundings around the circle to help the group find it later. The group rested and in the morning, Merenwen started checking for signs of anything that would be “abnormal” in the woods (like orges, orcs, bugbears, etc) and found the gnoll tracks while searching. She relayed some of the basic knowledge about gnolls (hyena-like, sneaky, not the bravest, travel in packs, etc) to the group for reference. She told them that flashy magic or killing the leader easily/quickly could get the rest of the pack to flee. Zeder was able to identify the magic taken from the thieves: +2 bracers and a whetstone that would make a weapon keen for 24hrs, but could only be used three times.

Merenwen led the others, following the gnoll tracks. The group surprised two gnoll scouts and a hyena. Merenwen shot one of them and both Moleiri and Zeder hit them with faerie fire. The hyena charged Merenwen and Zeder while the gnolls ran away. Merenwen killed it and followed after Moleiri who was chasing the gnolls. The gnolls split up so Moleiri waited for the others to catch up. When they did, Merenwen went back to looking for the freshest and largest number gnoll tracks. The party heard a gnoll voice shout at the drow that they would make a deal. The leader offered information on a group of humans a half-day away, but the discussion went badly and the gnoll leader told the rest of his party to “kill them all”… After a very lengthy battle, the party was victorious and even ended up with a sleeping prisoner. Moleiri was wounded and Zeder was out of cure lights, so we decided to rest.
